Moving to Minimalist Running Shoes

April 6, 2012 | Steven McElwee

Last night I bought my first pair of minimalist running shoes. I bought New Balance Minimus shoes with Vibram soles – not the five finger variety. I have been continuing to have problems with shin splints, and I read that minimalist shoes may help to correct for running problems that may cause shin splints.

This morning I laced them up and went out for my first run. I started small, like you are supposed to, running just a half a mile. It was a great feeling. I shifted my run to a mid to front foot strike to avoid coming down hard on my heels. I ran on grass as much as possible, but this was only for about half of the run.

By the time I got home, I realized that I had dramatically shifted the muscles that were doing the work. My calves were incredibly sore – so sore that I could not walk up my stairs. This will be great for building strong calves.

I plan to introduce the minimalist shoes slowly into my running routine. I am adding one day a week to run in them, and I am planning to gradually increase my distance. I’ll keep you posted on how it is working for me.

Do you run in minimalist shoes. Please let me know your experience.
